Youth Music Network

Youth Music Network has been on pause since March 13th 2020 due to COVID.

The Youth Music Network is the longest running program of the Laboratory of Urban Culture and the only one that runs all year round.  This is where it all began for LUC, and is the backbone of our presence in Little Burgundy. Weekly sessions first began in February 2017 with youth from BUMP, the Burgundy Urban Mediation Project. These sessions ran from February-August, in the lobby of Le Salon 1861, alternating between strings, percussion and ukulele, piano and other special workshops. By the fall a room had been renovated for use at Le Salon 1861 and a Music Counts grant facilitated the purchase of multiple instruments and equipment. The music sessions started up again and ran from October 2017 through February 2018, this time focusing on piano.

From February - May 2018 the group continued, but now expanded to open sessions on multiple instruments. By April 2018 a second group started weekly sessions, made up of community members, many connected with a local mosque that is also housed in Le Salon 1861. These two groups continued to hold weekly classes from June 2018 through to the beginning of the lockdown due to the coronavirus in March 2020.
